Job Description

West Island School is seeking a Head of Physical Health Education (PHE) Faculty starting in August 2023 to join a highly successful team. We welcome applications from all applicants of all specialist sports. (Full Time Two Years contract, renewable by mutual agreement).

Working with a team of six specialist teachers, and two assistant PE technicians, you will be an experienced and ambitious leader who is passionate about PHE across the age and ability range for secondary school learners aged 11-19. Our students are taught in either mixed or single-sex groups depending on the sport and grade level. As a specialist, you will be able to teach and lead a team to deliver high-quality outcomes to both single and mixed-gender groups.

PHE is taught as part of the IBMYP framework for students between the ages of 11-14 using inquiry approaches, conceptual understanding and skills development. While direct experience of the IBMYP program is not essential, a willingness to learn and empathy for inquiry-based approaches is needed. Until now, some of the health components have been taught in a separate Personal Social Health curriculum outside of the faculty. From 2023, this will be gradually integrated fully into the PHE teaching units, covering all areas of knowledge including diet, relationships, substance misuse, rights and responsibilities. Your expertise and knowledge of managing this change with and through the team and others for responsibility in this part of the curriculum will be critical to the leadership task.

From ages 14-16, all students follow a core programme of sports, health, and fitness training. Some students also take iGCSE PE as an examined course and many participate in our Sports Leadership course. All Post 16 students follow a core programme which includes fitness, exercise, and team sports with a number of students choosing to study BTec Level 3 and/or IB Sports Science at either Standard or Higher level. Our preferred candidate will be able to contribute to teaching some of the examination courses and experience of IBDP will be an advantage.

At West Island School, teachers of PHE demonstrate exceptional commitment to student success. As a result, we have very high participation rates in extra-curricular programmes and school sports teams as well as exceptional athletic performance. We have a heated indoor swimming pool, double-height gym, weights room, cricket nets, basketball courts, and rooftop sports pitches as well as use of Hong Kong University sporting facilities during lessons and for whole school events. This includes our annual sports days and swim gala. You will need to have the skill and confidence to work with external partners fostering good relationships and identifying synergy for our mutual provision of sports.

The school has an enviable record of sporting excellence throughout Hong Kong, nurturing Athletes who progress to the club and national teams, including a former Olympian. Many staff from other faculty areas are also involved in teaching PE or coaching sports teams to match the needs and ambitions of students. You will therefore need to be able to engage the wider staff who are used to taking responsibility for school teams in different year groups.

The school has been a runner-up and winner of the Bauhinia Bowl for the best overall co-educational school in Hong Kong as well as receiving awards for individual student performances and teams who achieve the top in their league. We compete in the HKSSF, ISSF and ESF League and you will be able to oversee the schedules of events working with our administrators, engage students in competition and aim high for our continued recognition as a school of sporting excellence. Consequently, the successful candidate will contribute fully to extracurricular sports, sometimes being willing to give time on a weekend to fixtures, and you should outline the areas you have particular coaching experience or expertise yourself.

All teachers at West Island School are tutors to a group of approximately 15 students within a particular year group and you should be able to demonstrate a commitment to the holistic development of young people through pastoral work. It is essential that you are willing and able to contribute to the wider life of our school such as leading overseas visits and trips.

In return for your passion for delivering quality education, we offer a highly competitive salary, exceptional end-of-contract gratuity, housing allowance, passage, health care and subsidized school places for your children. Our strength as part of the English Schools Foundation means that we offer security and the opportunities that are inherent in an established organization of our size.

Please refer to the ESF recruitment website as well as our own school-based website for further information.
