The primary function of the Science Laboratory Technician is to work within the Science teachers to provide technical support when implementing the Science curriculum and associated programmes.</p><p><b>KEY RESPONSIBILITIES<br /></b></p><p>The position of Science Laboratory Technician has the following key responsibilities:</p><ul><li>Prepare experiments for classes in Years 7-12<br /></li><li>Organise storage of equipment in a logical and safe manner and ensure the security of the classrooms and laboratory when not in use.</li><li>Monitor, record and assist in the maintaining of the budget for the Science Department</li><li>Purchase materials on behalf of the Science Department from a variety of sources</li><li>Liaise with the Head of Science, Science Teachers other staff who use the Science Laboratories regarding the setting out and clearing up of equipment</li><li>Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of practicals for use in course work material</li><li>Support and assist teaching staff in the effective management of the students in the Science laboratories and assist students to achieve their learning objectives and outcomes where necessary</li><li>Participate in professional development as required</li><li>Undertake other administrative duties related to management and coordination of the Science laboratories</li><li>Adhere to and implement all safe working practices and procedures in accordance with the School’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and practices</li><li>Monitor and take full care to ensure the health and safety of self and others within the Science laboratories, including the resolution of safety issues as required</li><li>Prepare Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for substances and/or hazardous equipment used in experiments.</li></ul><p><b>KEY SELECTION CRITERIA</b></p><p>The position of Science Laboratory Technician requires the following key skills and experience:</p><ul><li>Previous experience working as a Science Technician within a Science laboratory and/or educational setting (ideally within a Middle and/or Senior School)<br /></li><li>Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a capacity to develop effective relationships with both adults and students</li><li>Proven organisational and time management skills and an ability to meet deadlines</li><li>Proven ability to treat all students with respect and to actively support the learning and management plans for students in a consistent and appropriate manner</li><li>Knowledge of the Middle School and or Senior School Science curriculum would be highly desirable.</li><li>Proven capacity to work in a team environment.</li></ul><p><b>QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE</b></p><p>The position of Science Laboratory Technician requires the following qualifications and experience</p><p><u>Mandatory:</u><br /></p><ul><li>Relevant tertiary and/or post-secondary qualifications and experience as a Science Laboratory Technician.<br /></li><li>It is a condition of employment that staff must possess First Aid qualifications and have current Anaphylaxis Management training. If you don’t have training this can be arranged during your probationary period.</li></ul><p><u>Highly Desirable:</u></p><ul><li>Previous experience working as a Science Laboratory Technician within an educational environment<br /></li></ul><p><br /></p><p><b>All employees of The McDonald College must undertake an NSW Working with Children Check (Employment) prior to appointment.</b></p><p>Note - the salary for this role will be pro-rated in line with the hours.</p>
