Perform Australia is Canberra’s leading drama school, and the only ACT institution offering professional actor training qualifications to Advanced Diploma level. We're a registered training organisation (RTO 40859) but we also offer a huge suite of non-accredited programs, including after-school drama classes, musical theatre production programs, adult leisure programs, and private tuition in speech, singing and auditions coaching.

As such, we’re a leader in our field – and we’re looking for passionate people who are keen to lead others in the following two roles - either one person can fill both roles, or we can fill both as two part-time roles.

CHILDREN'S PROGRAM MANAGER (15-20 hours per week)
Drama/English Teaching Background Required

When you become Perform Australia's Children's Program Manager, you'll be responsible for ensuring we deliver inspiring drama programs to students aged 4-17.

You’ll be involved in programming and work with professional actors to plan, create and deliver curriculum in a timely manner to the team of teachers you supervise. You’ll source and sometimes commission scripts to use in classes across our programs. You’ll come up with great ideas for school holiday programs and from time to time you’ll liaise with guest speakers from industry. Sometimes you’ll come up with new initiatives to serve our students’ needs and interests.

You’ll mentor incoming actors to help them to apply their craft in the classroom in an effective manner, delivering exciting lessons to children and teens. Not only that, you’ll think carefully about which staff to assign to each class, and facilitate smooth handovers when needed. You’ll visit your team onsite from time to time, and give them in-person feedback on how to improve their lessons, so we can be sure we’re delivering the best possible experience to the kids. As part of this you’ll revise and update our training manuals and induction processes when needed.

You’ll work with the Academic Adviser on our specialist Thrive program for talented students in Years 7-10, offering support and giving input into the general direction of the program.

You’ll oversee a range of performances through the year, in collaboration with our production manager, and you’ll work with directors on our musical theatre shows to make sure they are adequately resourced to do their job well.

You’ll be the point of contact with the venues we hire for classes in the suburbs, not only in the ACT, but also in NSW and QLD. You’ll also make sure we’re up-to-date with our COVIDsafe plans in those places. And you’ll take care of child safety protocols and procedures.

You’ll sort out various queries from parents like “Why hasn’t my child been cast in the lead role?” through to “My child’s suffering anxiety in class, what can we do?” and “Is my child ready to go up to the next level?”, while administration takes care of general parent enquiries.

Overall, you’re someone with amazing organisational skills, able to develop systems for the smooth operation of programs. You’re perceptive, able to sense when others need your help, and you’re sensitive when needing to give feedback and correction. You’re an experienced teacher, and able to share your knowledge about the art of teaching. You’re an amazing problem-solver, but you also know when you need to pull in other minds to help. But most of all, you’re a creative – and you’ll bring creativity to every aspect of your role. You believe in supporting others to explore their creativity through dramatic art.

ACADEMIC ADVISER, THE THRIVE PROGRAM (15-20 hours per week)
Teaching background in any discipline required

When you become Perform Australia’s Academic Adviser to the Thrive Program, you’ll oversee a wonderful cohort of around 15 young actors in Years 7-10 – and you’ll also check in on our actors in Year 11 and 12 in the Young Professionals Program.

Each day will begin with you in the classroom, assisting the students with their distance education. Some will be watching lessons, others will be working on assignments, and others will be working with one another. You’re part supervisor, part helper. You’ll make sure it’s a safe and happy classroom while different students have different priorities.

You’ll invest in each child by meeting with them individually every week, building a relationship with them and being involved in their pastoral care. You’ll also use that time to address any academic issues, develop ILPs, and work with them to ensure their success. You’ll be a point of liaison with the distance education provider as well.

You’ll impart important life skills, like teaching them how to organise themselves and how to plan their work – as well as how to solve problems in friendships as they arise.

At the end of each term, you’ll supervise exams, and you’ll coordinate student reports. You’ll also handle other occasional tasks like orientation sessions, excursions and immunisations.

You’ll communicate with parents on a regular basis, about Perform Australia’s activities, performances, plans for the program, and about individual student concerns. You’ll be confident speaking to parents, understanding what matters to them about their child’s education and wellbeing.

You’ll meet with teachers on the program, who are professional performers, and support them as needed to help in their role as tutors, knowing they are not school teachers but that they bring a wealth of information and knowledge to share. You’ll chat with them about solving classroom management issues as they arise. And you’ll also work with Perform Australia’s Children’s Program Manager to set priorities for the Thrive program in the context of Perform Australia’s broader work.

You are someone who is patient and kind with a heart for young people and their needs. You believe in the value of students exploring their talent in the performing arts. You’re also extremely organised and can teach young people to be the same. You are confident using tools to do this, like templates and software. And you’re a qualified, registered teacher who’s looking for a different way to use your educational skills. Most of all, you are willing and able to communicate with students, tutors, parents and the Perform Australia executive to ensure the Thrive program is a success.

Please refer to the application instructions to apply for one or both of these roles.
