Contract Type: Permanent/Ongoing Position Full Time

Georges River Grammar, a K-12 school in the Anglican tradition, is seeking to employ a chaplain who understands the challenges of adolescence and is passionate about youth ministry.

School Chaplain

Permanent 4/5 days per week

Commencing 21 January 2021

About GRG:

More than 30 years ago, the Rector (Fr. Tony Wood) and the Assistant Rector (Fr. Arthur Rossiter) opened St. Paul’s Choir School in the Rectory of St. Paul’s Anglican Church Bankstown, so that they could have a choir to sing the 1662 Book of Common Prayer Anglican Service each Sunday. It was here in such humble beginnings that the foundations of Georges River Grammar were established. As the small school grew, the need became apparent for a Secondary school, which would see the Anglican and Uniting Churches in Bankstown opening Bankstown Grammar School as a joint venture. In 1988, the Uniting Church withdrew from the partnership and Bankstown Grammar School became an independent coeducational Anglican Secondary School.

Bankstown Grammar School moved to the Georges Hall site in 1989 followed by St Paul’s Choir School in 1991. While both schools were entirely separate entities, the Schools had the same Principal and, in an effort, to extend this continuity, in 2004, the two Schools combined to form one. Today, this journey of over three decades has transformed St Paul’s Choir School and Bankstown Grammar School into Georges River Grammar; a School in the Anglican tradition.

It is our aim to foster a community where God’s love and forgiveness are understood. In turn, Christian values direct our witness to one another, our local community and our worldview.

At Georges River Grammar, our aim is to provide each student with a Christian foundation that encourages them to understand Biblical reliability and theology for today’s world. Through weekly Christian Studies classes and student Chapel services, we support the spiritual growth of our students. We learn about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and provide opportunities for spiritual growth through Christian service and acts of charity towards the poor, underprivileged and marginalised. All who support the Anglican ethos of the School are welcome in our GRG Community.

As a School in the Anglican tradition, Georges River Grammar has no legal connection with the Sydney Anglican Diocese. However, our ministry in education is respectful of the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, the Sydney Anglican Schools Cooperation, the Anglican Education Commission and Anglican Schools Australia.

Specialist Skills and Experience

We are looking for a chaplain who understands the challenges of adolescence and is passionate about youth ministry.

The successful applicant will, together with the Principal, lead the School’s spiritual direction.

On a weekly basis, the successful applicant will:

• produce highly engaging chapel services for staff and students;

• organise and attend camps and retreats;

• run community outreach programs, local and global;

• be involved in the design and implementation of the Schools student leadership programs;

• teach Christian Studies classes;

• run lunchtime Bible study groups;

• be available to provide spiritual support to members of the School community in times of need.

Essential Criteria

• A personal commitment to and relationship with Christ

• A Protestant, evangelical perspective

• Degree in Theology or equivalent

• Ability to work in a very diverse community

• Kind, compassionate, caring

• Characteristically open, inclusive and non-judgemental

• Highly developed interpersonal, communication and organisational skills with the proven ability to lead and work collaboratively within a team

• Ability to spiritually counsel

• A confidence in developing and teaching a Christian Studies program

• A clear ability to communicate the Gospel and a Biblical understanding of the Christian faith

• Proven ability to successfully work with and inspire teenagers and young people

Desirable Criteria

• Teaching qualification

• Highly engaging personality

This position requires the successful applicant to have a Working with Children Check clearance in accordance with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012, prior to employment at the School.

Applications in writing, addressing the Essential Criteria and including a curriculum vitae, are to be addressed to: The Principal, Georges River Grammar 53 Georges Crescent Georges Hall NSW 2198 Applications should be emailed to employment@grg.nsw.edu.au

Applications close Sunday 15 November 2020
