Giant Steps Tasmania is looking for a dynamic and motivated teaching professional to join our team. This exciting opportunity for a quite unique and rewarding teaching experience will be a full-time position starting in term 1, 2021 Giant Steps Tasmania is an independent school for children on the autism spectrum, situated in Deloraine in Northern Tasmania. The school enrols students aged between 5 and 18 who have a clinical diagnosis of autism.

<p>There are currently four class groups at Giant Steps and the school is looking to recruit a teacher for one of its primary classes commencing in Term 1, 2021.  <br /></p><p>Each class at Giant Steps has a maximum of 10 students and is staffed by a fully qualified teacher, who works alongside and leads a team of education assistants. Further support for our staff and students is provided by our Education Administrator, Speech Therapist, Extended Learning Teacher and Occupational Therapist. Giant Steps is proud of its holistic approach to the education of students on the autism spectrum and teachers, allied health staff and education assistants work collaboratively to develop curriculum and programs that are suited to students’ varied stages of learning and development. </p><p>Students at Giant Steps learn from the Australian Curriculum, requiring teachers to be skilled in differentiation, with high level curriculum knowledge, in order to make appropriate adjustments to ensure learning is meaningful and students learn successfully. Each student also has an Individual Learning Plan (IEP), requiring teachers to be skilled in goal setting and program planning. Of equal importance to the academic curriculum, are the school’s interventions and support programs that focus on students’ communication skills, self-regulation and social/emotional skills. Our student-centred approach to learning requires teachers to cater for each child’s academic, social, personal and emotional needs. </p><p><b>Selection Criteria </b></p><p>1 Demonstrated experience of teaching primary-aged students with special needs, including: </p><p>• Experience with differentiating teaching and learning, providing adjustments or applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning, to cater for diverse needs. </p><p>• Experience with student behaviour support. </p><p> </p><p>2 Demonstrated high level knowledge of the Australian Curriculum, including: </p><p>• Demonstrated skills in planning and assessment using the Australian Curriculum. </p><p>• A capacity to plan effectively for multi-age groupings using age appropriate curriculum. </p><p>3 Demonstrated high level classroom teaching skills and the capacity to work collaboratively with colleagues, including working alongside and leading education assistants. </p><p> </p><p>4 Demonstrated ability to monitor and assess student learning and to use evidence and data to inform teaching and enhance student learning. </p><p>5 Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including the capacity to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with parents, colleagues and the broader school community. </p><p>6 Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with school values, including a commitment and capacity to actively contribute to school or student activities and a commitment to ongoing professional development and learning. </p><p> </p><p> </p><p><b>Responsibilities </b></p><p>The role of classroom teacher may include but is not limited to: </p><p>• Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students </p><p>• Managing and guiding education assistants assigned to the classroom </p><p>• Liaising with allied health professionals to determine the needs of, and programs for, individual students </p><p>• Liaising with staff at other schools where students are dual enrolled, to share knowledge of students’ needs and progress </p><p>• Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school curriculum and school policies and procedures </p><p>• Undertaking other teaching and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal </p><p>• Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings, staff meetings and excursions </p><p>• Undertaking other non-teaching supervisory duties. </p><p>Who May Apply </p><p>Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Teachers’ Registration Board of Tasmania and qualified to teach. </p><p> </p><p>Conditions of Employment </p><p>• Appointment of successful applicants will be made subject to a satisfactory pre-employment conditions check (including Police Check and presentation of a current Working with Vulnerable People card). </p><p>• A probationary period may apply during the first year of employment and induction and support programs will be provided. </p><p>How to Apply </p><p>Please provide a covering letter addressing the selection criteria, role and responsibilities and giving the names and addresses of two referees.
